This Sunday

Weekly sermons at SUMC

Do you enjoy listening to the weekly sermons here at SUMC? Would you like to listen to them even when you are on vacation or out of town? Well, we do have all the sermons available for you to listen to and they are typically posted to our church website each Sunday. And if you have an iPod or iPad, you can subscribe to the sermons so they will automatically be downloaded to your device for easy listening! To sign up for the automatic feed, go to our sermon page: and then click on the iTunes logo. This will connect you to our iTunes page where you can listen to the sermons or view them in iTunes where you can sign up for the automatic feed. Share this link with your friends and family members. We hope you enjoy this way of staying connected to our sermons here at SUMC.

Children's Bulletins Available

Children's bulletins are available at the back of the sanctuary. There are two groups - ages 3-6 and ages 7-12.

Our Special Person of the Week:

Marti Ernest, PO Box 1121, Stroudsburg, PA 18360. Please remember her in prayer and if possible, please send a card.

Sanctuary Open for Prayer

The church sanctuary is open to the public for prayer and/or quiet reflection on Wednesdays from noon to 1 pm. You are invited to take advantage of this time if you are in town during the week, and please let your friends know also. Years ago churches were open during the week for anyone to wander in to pray, however now, because of safety concerns, most churches stay locked. We would like the community to know we are an active and "alive" church and offer this opportunity to anyone who needs a quiet space, even if it is only for one hour a week. Please share with your friends and family.

Cub Pack 86 Semi-Annual Spaghetti Dinner

Saturday, October 7 from 5-7 pm. Please use the Ann Street entrance. $7.00 for adults (12 and over), $5.00 for kids ages 5-11; children 4 and under are free. Dinner includes spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and beverages. Chat with friends and neighbors as you dine in, or order dinner to go. All proceeds benefit the Cub Scouts of BSA Cub Scout Pack 86.

Open Office Hours

Pastor Bob will begin having open office hours each Wednesday from 11:30am-1:30pm starting on October 11. These hours will be open to anyone who wants to talk about anything. Please note the date in the October Courier is incorrect. Sorry for any confusion.

Pet names can be added, too! Order forms are in the back of the sanctuary. Please make your check payable to SUMC and note for "Memorial Tree Leaf" in the memo portion. Completed order forms and payment may be left in the box outside Jackie's office or placed in the offering plate. Please contact the church office with any questions. Proceeds from the sale of memorial leaves will be put toward the remaining bell tower repair bill. Thank you!

New Pictorial Directory

Plans are in the works for a new pictorial directory. Watch for updates on pricing, photography dates, etc. in upcoming eNews publications.

Stewardship and Property & Building Update

The Stewardship Committee and the Property & Building Committee are seeking donations to help fund a new heating and air conditioning unit for the church offices. The church offices have been without air conditioning for two summers. A new unit will eliminate the need for space heaters in the winter. The total needed to complete this project is $5,380.00. To date, over $1,000.00 has been generously donated. If you can help, please place your donations in the offering plate marked for "Heating and Air Conditioning Unit" or mail your checks to the church office. If you have questions, please contact the church office or a member of either Property & Building or Stewardship. Thank you!

Soup Kitchen Help Needed

Beryl Hellgren is seeking help with the soup kitchen duties. She is unable to handle all of the tasks herself. Volunteers are needed to inventory the pantry downstairs, schedule soup kitchen volunteers and volunteer a few Sunday's during the year when she needs people. Another person is also needed to help out with the recycling. Dick Seip has been taking care of this himself for quite some time and could use a hand (or two!) These tasks may seem monumental and daunting but they're really not. If you can help out in ANY way please contact Beryl or the church office. Thank you!

Jars for Jam Needed

If you have any empty jam jars at home from jam you have purchased in previous years, please bring them to church so they may be reused for this year's batches of jam. Please make sure the jars are clean. Thank you!

M & E Tract Program

Our church mission is "Share the Love of Jesus in Innovative and Compassionate Ways". The Membership & Evangelism Committee has developed a tract program which will be an excellent tool to help you share the gospel with others. This system has been referred to as "Silent Missionaries". A tract is a folded printed piece of paper that starts with a story or provoking question which invites persons to think about their relationship with Christ. On September 10th, racks (a gift of Charles Armitage) containing the tracts will be placed in the Narthex (Main front entry) and the elevator foyer. Caution: Do not use a tract before reading the tract titled, "100 Reasons and Ways to Use Gospel Tracts". This pamphlet gives 90 ideas of how to use and 10 how NOT to use a gospel tract. This complete tract is found in the September Courier. A verbal presentation will be given during worship on Sunday, September 10 during a Moment for M & E at both services. The complete tract will be in your September 10 bulletin and will be placed in the rack as well. Reasons for the necessity of instructions are: 1. All distribution should be done in kind, loving manner that brings glory and honor to God, preferably one at a time. 2. These have our church name on them, so please use them in an appropriate manner. 3. Read what you pass out, so you don't put yourself in an uncomfortable situation. 4. Don't litter - tracts left outside can easily blow around and become a nuisance to those who have to clean them up. Don't leave piles of them in public places. There will be more information on the appropriate, suggested personal use - watch for it. Ask personal questions of Peggy Stewart or JoAnn Calkins ( or 570-402-1210)

Check out our active Small Groups and consider joining one of them. Alternatively, do you have a passion or interest? Then maybe you can start a brand new Small Group. Make a Difference!

Give to a Mission

A variety of missions are supported in our church. You can make a difference both locally and around the world by giving to these missions. A list of missions we support is posted in the Fellowship Room. You can also suggest a new mission that interests you by providing the name and address of the mission, as well as some details about what this particular mission does. Thank you for your continued support! If you have any questions, please see a member of the Missions Team or call the church office.

Bon Ton Community Days Booklets

Our Missions Committee is participating in Bon Ton's Community Days November 8-12, 2017. Booklets are available online for $5.00! Free shipping and Missions earns the entire $5.00. The booklets are filled with coupons worth over $500.00! Please see a member of Missions after service on Sunday if you are interested in purchasing a booklet.

Family Promise Update

SUMC hosted families from Family Promise the week of September 10-17. The generosity and hospitality of all volunteers, whether providing delicious meals, overnight supervision, or compassionate care, is greatly appreciated by the families and the staff of Family Promise. You served 24 meals and contributed more than 201 hours of service to the two families in shelter that week. Thank you, all!

Left Over Yard Sale Items

There are some pieces of furniture left over from the yard sale as well as floor tiles and other items. If someone would like to take on a project of refinishing the furniture, the pieces might be a great addition to some of the rooms here in our church. A little paint would give the pieces a new look and brighten up our church. It may possibly increase our chances of selling the furniture if it was redone. Please contact the church office or a member of the Missions Team if you are interested. Or maybe some of you have other ideas? Please let us know. Thank you!

Oasis of Love - Food Pantry

We are always collecting donations for Oasis of Love, our local food pantry here in Stroudsburg. There is a box for donations in the sanctuary. If you have questions, please call the church office - 570-421-6020. Thank you! Update: The Oasis of Love Food Pantry is very low on donations. If you could bring a few non-perishables with you to church or drop them off to me during the week, I will see to it that the items are delivered to Oasis of Love. Thank you in advance!
