This Sunday

This Sunday we start a new sermon series on Missions. In the first sermon we'll be discussing what missions are. Come out and join us on Sunday as together we learn about missions and how we can all get our "hands on" this important church ministry.

Table Project

Table Project is an online church software program that allows church members and friends to sit at a virtual table. One cool feature is that we can post prayer requests on the table and others can respond by praying for the person. When the prayer is prayed, you can indicate that the person has been prayed for on the page and a running count of how many prayers were lifted up! Another feature allows Small Groups to stay connected privately among themselves and only themselves. The leaders of the Small Groups will have the option of opening their Table page to everyone or just those who are members of their Small Group. If the group is private then no one else sees their content. A feature I really like is called Serve. Here we can post the different volunteer needs we have in the church. We can explain in detail what the need is and people can sign up to volunteer for this specific need. Pretty cool, huh? I believe our new Stroudsburg UMC Table Project will be helpful to us on a number of levels to stay connected with one another. Go to this new page and sign up today! Then fill out your profile and start exploring the content we already started. Add some content of your own: prayer requests, volunteer opportunities, etc. Join our interactive online Bible Study on Monday evenings at 7:00 pm! Follow this link:

Weekly sermons at SUMC

Do you enjoy listening to the weekly sermons here at SUMC? Would you like to listen to them even when you are on vacation or out of town? Well, we do have all the sermons available for you to listen to and they are typically posted to our church website each Sunday. And if you have an iPod or iPad, you can subscribe to the sermons so they will automatically be downloaded to your device for easy listening! To sign up for the automatic feed, go to our sermon page: and then click on the iTunes logo. This will connect you to our iTunes page where you can listen to the sermons or view them in iTunes where you can sign up for the automatic feed. Share this link with your friends and family members. We hope you enjoy this way of staying connected to our sermons here at SUMC.

Live streaming worship at 8:30 am!

We are still live streaming 8:30 worship. This means that when you cannot be here physically for worship due to illness or vacation, you can still worship with us here at Stroudsburg UMC! Here is the link: In an effort to help make live streaming look better, we are asking the 8:30 worshippers to move forward instead of sitting in the back of the church. Your willingness to move forward will help viewers at home see that we actually do have people in worship, instead of them seeing all the empty pews toward the front of the sanctuary. Please help us to enhance this new feature of worship by moving forward and sitting in the front of the sanctuary. This will also leave the prized back seats for our visitors! Thank you for your cooperation.

Sunday Pre-Service Prayer Teams

Please give prayerful consideration to participating in the Sunday Pre-Service Prayer Teams. Teams should consist of at least three people and no more than five persons. This means we are looking for between six and ten people every month (3-5 for each service) who will meet before each service and ask our Father that the Holy Spirit not only be present, but work through those leading our service and work in and through those participating in the service. A sign up sheet has been posted in the Fellowship Room (on the bulletin board near the kitchen). You may also call the church office @ 421-6020 to sign up or Dave Cottle @ 570-242-1480 for more information. Join with us to pray, grow deeper in the Lord and watch as He changes lives and makes a difference one person at a time. He has said, "....test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it". Malachi 3:10.

Helping Hands Ministry

The Helping Hands Ministry is happy to report that they have been quietly working throughout our congregation. Thank you to all the dedicated volunteers! If you or a family member are in need of assistance, please contact the church office. If you wish to add or update your availability and areas of service, please contact Cathy Doane.

SUM Softball Game Results

SUM played Innovation Church last Monday in the first game of the playoff tournament. SUM played sharp defense and Brian Dwinal's pitching was on the mark, only allowing 1 walk in 7 innings. SUM, playing as the away team, trailed 9 to 6 going into the 7th inning, but scored four runs in the top of the 7th to take a 10 to 9 lead. But SUM could not hold the lead and lost the game in the bottom of the 7th on a dramatic play to the plate 11 to 10. The tournament is a 2 loss elimination so SUM returns to action on Monday, August 4 at Pinebrook Field at 6 pm. We would like to thank all the fans who came out last Monday to support the team and we hope you all come out on Monday night as well!

Small Groups

Do you belong to a Small Group? If not, you really should seriously consider doing so. There are a variety of opportunities available which you can see on our website. You will be able to see a brief description of each Small Group, view when and where they meet, and see if there are openings to join the groups. Check out our active Small Groups and consider joining one of them. Alternatively, do you have a passion or interest? Then maybe you can start a brand new Small Group. Contact JoAnn Calkins or Pastor Bob for more information.

Stitch & Pray Small Group

This group is for beginner and experienced knitters and crocheters. The compassion and love of knitting and crocheting have been combined into a prayerful ministry which reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace, as well as in celebration and joy through prayer shawls. We welcome all levels of experience from beginner to those wanting to increase their knowledge or to share their expertise with others while experiencing the companionship of a small group. No materials are required. Current members will share their equipment. Meets the first Wednesday of every month at 2 pm in the church Lounge and the third Tuesday of every month at 7 pm also in the Lounge; if scheduling conflicts arise - the Fellowship Room or the conference room. Contact Carole Everitt at 421-0459.

Make a Difference!

Give to a Mission

A variety of missions are supported in our church. You can make a difference both locally and around the world by giving to these missions. A list of missions we support is posted in the Fellowship Room. You can also suggest a new mission that interests you by providing the name and address of the mission, as well as some details about what this particular mission does.

We always need volunteers for meals, overnight stays, fellowship, etc. Please consider keeping your calendar open that week and helping out in some way. August Item of the Month for UMW Totes

Item of the month for August is shampoo. Please leave your donations in the trunk in the Fellowship Room. Thank you!

Oasis of Love - Food Pantry

Our local food pantry, Oasis of Love, is very low on food supplies. If you can help out with some non-perishable food items, please bring them to church on Sunday and place them in the boxes provided in the sanctuary or drop them off to me at the church office during the week. Thank you! Jackie

Packs for Backs Project

This will be the eleventh year for the Packs for Backs Project. Last year, from a suggestion from a student, we included insulated lunch cases with the backpacks. Due to the cut backs in the caloric content of the hot lunches; students who participate in after school activities need to take along a substantial snack in order to have the energy to compete in sports, march with the band and other endeavors. The lunch packs were so well received we will continue with them.

If you would like to participate in this worthwhile aim you can do so by choosing the method that pleases you the most. You can buy a backpack, lunch container or traditional school supplies and take them to the First Presbyterian Church’s Office at 575 Main Street in Stroudsburg from 9:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. Monday through Friday. Trapper Keepers do not fit into the students’ desks and we avoid using them. Useful pieces include glue, glue sticks, tooth brushes, toothpaste, crayons, washable markers, erasers, spiral notebooks, notepaper, pencils, pens and similar products. If you would like to donate the funds to purchase the backpacks at a reduced price you can use a check, which is a tax deductible donation, made payable to Pack for Backs Project and mail it to 1119 Beacon Hill Road, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301. The items will be purchased and taken to the Clothing Room for distribution. Your participation is greatly appreciated and we thank you for it. If you have any questions about the program please call Margie Good at 570-424-5251

Stroudsburg Junior High School Weekend Back Pack Program

The program provides small nutritious meals to students on Saturdays and Sundays. Needy students are given a back pack with enough food for the weekend on Friday afternoon, and the students return the empty back pack on Monday morning. A list of suggested food donations is posted on the bulletin board outside the Conference Room. A copy can also be obtained from the church office. Donations can be in the form of gift cards or food items. Please contact Jill Symons with any questions:

Request for Bibles

We have had a request in the church office for gently used Bibles to be donated to Derry Street UMC, 1508 Derry Street, Harrisburg, PA, Attn: Pastor Mack Granderson. This church is located in the poorest section of Harrisburg and they need about 40 Bibles. If you can help out it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
