Celebrating 225 Years!

This Sunday

This Sunday is the last sermon in our latest series - Lost! This week the sermon title is "Are You Lost?". We will resume our Small Group video presentations this Sunday at both services. Next Sunday, September 15, our guest preacher will be Pastor George Rigby as we continue to celebrate our 225 year anniversary!

Table Project

Table Project is an online church software program that allows church members and friends to sit at a virtual table. One cool feature is that we can post prayer requests on the table and others can respond by praying for the person. When the prayer is prayed, you can indicate that the person has been prayed for on the page and a running count of how many prayers were lifted up! Another feature allows Small Groups to stay connected privately among themselves and only themselves. The leaders of the Small Groups will have the option of opening their Table page to everyone or just those who are members of their Small Group. If the group is private then no one else sees their content. A feature I really like is called Serve. Here we can post the different volunteer needs we have in the church. We can explain in detail what the need is and people can sign up to volunteer for this specific need. Pretty cool, huh? I believe our new Stroudsburg UMC Table Project will be helpful to us on a number of levels to stay connected with one another. Go to this new page and sign up today! Then fill out your profile and start exploring the content we already started. Add some content of your own: prayer requests, volunteer opportunities, etc.

Weekly sermons at SUMC

Do you enjoy listening to the weekly sermons here at SUMC? Would you like to listen to them even when you are on vacation or out of town? Well, we do have all the sermons available for you to listen to and they are typically posted to our church website each Sunday. And if you have an iPod or iPad, you can subscribe to the sermons so they will automatically be downloaded to your device for easy listening! To sign up for the automatic feed, go to our sermon page: and then click on the iTunes logo. This will connect you to our iTunes page where you can listen to the sermons or view them in iTunes where you can sign up for the automatic feed. Share this link with your friends and family members. We hope you enjoy this way of staying connected to our sermons here at SUMC.

We are now live streaming worship at 8:30 am!

Thanks to the efforts of Alex Herrero and Paul Edinger, we are now live streaming 8:30 worship. This means that when you cannot be here physically for worship due to illness or vacation, you can still worship with us here at Stroudsburg UMC! Here is the link: In an effort to help make live streaming look better, we are asking the 8:30 worshippers to move forward instead of sitting in the back of the church. Your willingness to move forward will help viewers at home see that we actually do have people in worship, instead of them seeing all the empty pews toward the front of the sanctuary. Please help us to enhance this new feature of worship by moving forward and sitting in the front of the sanctuary. This will also leave the prized back seats for our visitors! Thank you for your cooperation.

Homecoming Sunday

Homecoming Sunday will be October 6, 2013. Please note there will be one service this Sunday at 10:00 am. There will be an Anniversary luncheon following the service. Sign up sheets are in the back of the sanctuary to RSVP. You may also call the church office to RSVP.

History Committee

The newly formed History Committee is seeking more members. Anyone interested in joining this committee should contact Dave Cook @ 476-6261; or C.J. Penwell @ 421-1666;

The History Committee mission statement: "To preserve, research and record the history of the Stroudsburg United Methodist Church; and to make this history available to all interested parties and individuals."

Here is some of the History Committee's agenda, in addition to researching and producing the rest of the history movie:

To create a regularly changing history display in the church

To clean and refurbish the history room

To catalog the history room contents

To reorganize historical documents and artifacts

To make digital copies of important images and documents for preservation

Sunday Pre-Service Prayer Teams

Please give prayerful consideration to participating in the Sunday Pre-Service Prayer Teams. Teams should consist of at least three people and no more than five persons. This means we are looking for between six and ten people every month (3-5 for each service) who will meet before each service and ask our Father that the Holy Spirit not only be present, but work through those leading our service and work in and through those participating in the service. A sign up sheet has been posted in the Fellowship Room (on the bulletin board near the kitchen). You may also call the church office @ 421-6020 to sign up or Dave Cottle @ 570-242-1480 for more information. We would like to begin the full ministry with both teams fully staffed on Sept. 8 of 2013. Join with us to pray, grow deeper in the Lord and watch as He changes lives and makes a difference one person at a time. He has said, "....test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it". Malachi 3:10.

Ceramic Anniversary Tiles

The Anniversary tiles have arrived! Tiles will be available for pick up on Sunday in the Fellowship Room after services. If you didn't pre-order a tile, extras have been ordered. The cost is $10.00. (The tiles are beautiful, by the way!!)

Service for Veterans Day

The Membership & Evangelism Committee will be putting together a presentation honoring our veterans for Veterans Day in November. This includes those that served in the National Guard or Reserves. If you or a loved one served our nation and would like them and/or yourself to be honored, please provide a picture, preferably in uniform, to C.J. Penwell or to the church office. The picture will be scanned and returned to you. The veteran does not necessarily have to be a member of Stroudsburg United Methodist Church, past or present. We would like to honor all whether they are currently serving, are out of the service, or even if they are deceased. Along with the picture please provide their name, rank if known, and branch of service. Please have all pictures to us by October 15. Please contact C.J. Penwell with any questions - 421-1666.

Small Groups

You will be able to see a brief description of each Small Group, view when and where they meet, and see if there are openings to join the groups. Check out our active Small Groups and consider joining one of them. Alternatively, do you have a passion or interest? Then maybe you can start a brand new Small Group. Contact JoAnn Calkins or Pastor Bob for more information.

Confirmation Class

Confirmation Class for those in 7th grade and up is scheduled for January, 2014. Dates for this class will be announced in November or December, 2013.

Acolyte Ministry

We would like to propose an initiative to re-establish an active Acolyte Ministry at Stroudsburg United Methodist Church. This ministry would be open to youth as well as adults. The focus, however, would be on the youth for this is often the first opportunity children in the 3rd to 6th grades have to serve in the church. The purpose is to promote the mission of the church from the inside by growing our youth and adults to make a difference by their service being leaders in worship and preparing them for the responsibility of gathering disciples for Christ. We propose to begin recruiting and training acolytes beginning in September and have a full contingency by Anniversary Sunday. There will be no initial cost to begin this ministry. A sign up sheet is in the back of the sanctuary for those interested. If you have questions, please see Diane Rogell or Pam Cool. A training session has been scheduled for Saturday, September 21 from 1-2 pm; additional sessions will follow.

Make a Difference!

Give to a Mission

A variety of missions are supported in our church. You can make a difference both locally and around the world by giving to these missions. A list of missions we support is available in the back of the sanctuary. You can also suggest a new mission that interests you by providing the name and address of the mission, as well as some details about what this particular mission does.

Baby Bottle Boomerang

If you still have a baby bottle from the baby bottle boomerang that ended in June, please bring it back to the church as soon as possible. There are approximately 12 bottles that have not yet been returned. Thank you.

Volunteers Needed for VNA/Hospice of Monroe County

VNA/Hospice of Monroe County is looking for caring individuals for their volunteer program - the next training session is scheduled for September 2013. Volunteers are needed to provide friendly visits to patients and provide respite for their caregivers in their home. Volunteers are also needed to provide visits to patients staying in the acute care unit - Hospice House. Assistance with fundraising events is also needed. Assignments and hours vary according to volunteer's interests and availability. For more information, please call Tammy Hiestand, Volunteer Coordinator at 421-5390.

Family Promise News

SUMC is hosting families the week of October 13. New families are now being admitted to the program. The large family that was with us in May has successfully exited the program. The Family Promise Clothing Drive will be held on October 18. Items may be dropped off at Faith UMC on that day between 9 am and 6 pm. Clean, hard toys are being accepted as well as clothing, linens, etc. If anyone has any questions, please contact Kathy Cook.

Volunteers are needed to help Tyler Snyder

The project is for his Eagle Scout Award. If you are willing to volunteer, please contact Robin Farrow - 619-8474. Thank you!
