"Bearing Fruit for Jesus"

This Sunday we continue our sermon series on Bearing Fruit for Jesus. We will explore how we can discover and share the talents and skills God has given us. Do you know your specific talents and skills? How do you know? Are you sharing these talents and skills with others?

Jesus Prayer

Pastor Ted is overseeing a discipline prayer session and has been engaging in prayer with Cathy Doane for Theresa DeHaven. Prayers for Theresa are being lifted up to our Lord at 7 am and 7 pm each day. The Jesus Prayer can be said for anyone needing prayers. If you want to get involved please contact Pastor Ted - 424-5251.

Hospitality Team

We would like to start a hospitality team here at SUMC. Each Sunday, we would like to have a time of fellowship after services and we need a bit of help from you. Coffee, punch and a simple snack (Pretzels, chips, cookies, etc.) are all that's needed. Coffee and paper products are supplied. Teams of two people would be ideal for each service. So if you attend the 8:30 worship service, prepare for 8:30 only; 11:00 worship would be the same. A sign up list is in the Fellowship Room or you can call the church office. If enough people sign up you would only be responsible for one or two Sundays a year! I would be happy to help anyone interested. I know it can be a little intimidating for some of us. Please let me know if I can answer any questions that you have. If you want to come into the church office and talk to me about it, just give me a call! Thanks! Jackie

This will connect you to our iTunes page where you can listen to the sermons or view them in iTunes where you can sign up for the automatic feed. Share this link with your friends and family members. We hope you enjoy this way of staying connected to our sermons here at SUMC.

Helping Hands Ministry

The Helping Hands Ministry will provide help to those in our church family who find themselves in need for any number of reasons. Some members need a ride to a doctor's visit for a routine checkup. Others need rides to cancer treatments or to hear the results of a serious test. Another person might need some meals prepared for them during a time when they are recovering from surgery. Our desire is to be a good church family who helps each other out. We never know what might happen in life or when we, ourselves, might be in need of some help. Our job is not to pry into an individual's personal life, but to simply help them in a time of need. So, if you are willing to drive a person to an appointment or provide a simple meal for someone, please contact us. By doing these simple things we are, in fact, being the hands and feet of Jesus right here in our community! Please consider helping by getting involved in the Helping Hands Ministry!

Books, Books, Books!

There are many new books that have been added to the church library in the Lounge. Check them out! You may find a good "read"! Also, there are free books in the back of the sanctuary for anyone interested. Feel free to take one home with you after church this Sunday!

Family Promise - Updates

11/4/2012 - Thanks for Giving Dinner at Stroudsmoor. Tickets $45 each or 2 for $80. Please see Kathy Cook if you are interested. 10/21-10/28/2012 - SUMC will be hosting a group of 4 families. Sign up sheets are now available in the Fellowship Room. As always, thank you for any help or support you can provide. In these difficult economic times, it is most appreciated! Extra help is needed to do laundry. Now that the cooler weather is here and blankets are being used, there is extra laundry. Two people have signed up but with 10 sets of bed linens plus our support sleep over linens more help is needed. If you can help out doing laundry, please contact Kathy Cook. Thank you!

October is Pastor Appreciation Month

Why not show our pastors how much we appreciate their spiritual leadership, time, dedication and commitment with a note, card or phone call. Let them know how much we appreciate all they do for our church and for us!

Church Volleyball Team

Sign up sheets are in the back of the sanctuary for those interested in joining a church volleyball team. Please note there are two sheets - one for adults 18 and over and one for youth under 18.

"Heaven is for Real" Books Available

We have additional copies of the book "Heaven is for Real" available through the church office. Copies are $10.00 each.

Congratulations to Alberta Weber!

Dr. Alberta M. Finch received the A. Mitchell Palmer award recently at a dinner held at the Elks Lodge. Representatives Mario Scavello and Rosemary Brown were there as were judges, former judges and various community people. The award was presented by the Monroe County Bar Association and the Elks Club for outstanding community service. There were about 120 people present despite the rainy, windy weather! Congratulations!

SUMC UMW Fifth Annual Holiday Boutique - November 3, 2012

This year's annual Holiday Boutique will be held on Saturday, November 3 from 9 am - 3 pm. We need everyone in the church to support our worthwhile cause. It is a Churchwide event and we need the help of everyone in the church to make it a success. We need shuttle drivers on Saturday morning and again at 3 pm. We will be making soup for the boutique on Wednesday, October 31 at 9 am in the kitchen downstairs. We need people to generally help out. If you can give an hour or two it would be appreciated. The thing that we need the most is BAKED GOODS. They sell really fast and we need lots. Even if you could bake just one thing we would be grateful. We also try to supply the kitchen (YOUTH GROUP) with desserts to sell at lunch time. The Youth could use donations of canned soda and bottled water. If you can do any of these things, please call Eleanor Bentzoni at 421-2257, Gale Butz at 424-0957 or Lynn Seip at 421-6517. Thanks in advance for all your help.

We are now live streaming worship at 8:30 am!

Thanks to the efforts of Alex Herrero, Drenen Tucker, and Paul Edinger, we are now live streaming 8:30 worship. This means that when you cannot be here physically for worship due to illness or vacation, you can still worship with us here at Stroudsburg UMC! Here is the link: In an effort to help make live streaming look better, we are asking the 8:30 worshippers to move forward instead of sitting in the back of the church. Your willingness to move forward will help viewers at home see that we actually do have people in worship, instead of them seeing all the empty pews toward the front of the sanctuary. Please help us to enhance this new feature of worship by moving forward and sitting in the front of the sanctuary. This will also leave the prized back seats for our visitors! Thank you for your cooperation!

Small Groups

Do you belong to a Small Group? If not, you really should seriously consider doing so. There are a variety of opportunities available which you can see on our website. You will be able to see brief description of each Small Group, view when and where they meet, and see if there are openings to join the groups. Check out our active Small Groups and consider joining one of them. Alternatively, do you have a passion or interest? Then maybe you can start a brand new Small Group. Contact JoAnn Calkins or Pastor Bob for more information.

Digging Deeper Small Group

The Digging Deeper Small Group meets on Tuesday evenings at 7pm. This Small Group exists to dig deeper into our faith and grow spiritually. We do this through study, sharing our stories and experiences with each other, and hold each other up in love and mutual accountability. You can join this Small Group by emailing the leader, Pastor Bob, or calling the church office.

Media Team Operators are Needed

Especially at the 11:00 worship time. If you are interested, please contact Pastor Bob or the church office.

Bearing Fruit for Jesus!

This year's stewardship theme is Bearing Fruit for Jesus!: His Grace and Power at Work within You. Jesus said, "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit....fruit that will last" (John 15:16). Fruit characterizes the life of the Christian steward. Christ living in us enables us to bear fruit. Join us on Sundays October 21, 28, and November 4 in worship as we learn together how to be faithful and fruitful stewards. Don't forget to bring your commitment card to church next Sunday, November 4.

Make a Difference!

Operation Christmas Child 2012

Shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child are available in the back of the Fellowship Room. Pamphlets with instructions on how to fill the shoeboxes are in the back of the sanctuary. Extra pamphlets are on the table along with the shoe boxes. "Pack your shoe box with love, send it with prayer, and share the Good News of Jesus Christ with a hurting child. that's the power of a simple gift." Franklin Graham, President, Samaritan's Purse. Collection date is November 11, 2012.

Give to a Mission

A variety of missions are supported in our church. You can make a difference both locally and around the world by giving to these missions. A list of missions we support is available in the back of the sanctuary. You can also suggest a new mission that interests you by providing the name and address of the mission, as well as some details about what this particular mission does.

Helping Hands Ministry

Cathy Doane has started a new ministry at SUMC. The Helping Hands Ministry exists to utilize our God-given gifts and talents to assist members of the body of Christ. We grow together in Christ's love by helping each other and just by being there for each other in times of need. The areas of service where help is needed are: making meals, grocery shopping, phone calls, visitation, prayer, transportation, light housekeeping and emergency response. If you are willing to serve in any of these areas, please contact Cathy Doane or the church office. Thank you!

Oasis of Love, a local food pantry located on Monroe Street in Stroudsburg, is looking for volunteers to help with food distribution. If you are available during the week and are interested in volunteering, please call Frank Medero, Program Director at 570-972-0838. Also, if you have any food donations for Oasis of Love, please bring them to church and I will arrange to get them to Frank. Thank you! Jackie
