Worship this Sunday

Worship this Sunday will begin with a tribute to President's Day as we sing "America the Beautiful" in our first hymn. Music, prayer, and other uplifting worship experiences will be offered. The sermon will focus on spiritual preparation. The season of Lent is just around the corner and we will look at some practical ways to prepare ourselves spiritually for the season of Lent. Join us for a fun time of worship as we celebrate and dig deeper into our faith! Hope to see you on Sunday!

Sunday School News

During these difficult economic times, state and local governments have had to make budget cuts in public education. Often these cuts spark many to speak out about the importance of education and how our future as a nation is dependent on the education that children and youth receive. While there is an agreement on the importance of education in society, many fail to recognize the importance of education in our church. From the earliest days of the church, the importance of Christian education was emphasized. Here at Stroudsburg UMC, we are seeking to rebuild out Christian education program and you can be a part. First, add the rebuilding of the Christian education program at SUMC to your prayer list and regularly raise it up to God in prayer; second, start attending a Sunday School or Bible Study class; and third, consider helping out by contacting Jeff Weber at or 402-0931. All the Sunday School classes meet every Sunday 9:45 to 10:45. Here is what the different Sunday School classes are doing:

The Stories of the Bible - The Children's Sunday School class is covering different stories in the Bible to help the children learn the basic structure of the Bible and what loving God and loving others is all about. The class meets in the children's room on the main floor and is taught by Denise Shank and Peggy Stewart.

7 Habits - The Youth are looking at practical Christian ways to live life - keeping your moral compass in the right direction, having a vision, personal mission statements, setting and accomplishing goals, communication, and learning to work with others, are all subjects that are being covered. This class is combining Biblical principles for Godly life with Stephen Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. The Youth class meets in the upstairs youth room and is taught by Vin Zelizo.

What is in your future? - This year, 2012, has sparked an abundance of end time's predictons centering on the date December 21, 2012. In contrast to the hype and fear generated by many today, stands the Word of God. Beginning March 4th through June 10th, the Adult Sunday School will be studying the last book of the Bible, The Revelation to John. This is a great opportunity to separate fact from fiction, and to discover what the Bible really has to say about the end times. During this study, the four major interpretations of The Revelation will be explained and discussed. This class will meet downstairs in the blue room next to the kitchen, every Sunday 9:45 to 10:45. If you have any questions please contact Jeff Weber at or 402-0931.

SUMC Church Softball Team

We are trying to start a softball team from our church again. It's been some years since SUMC had a softball team, but there is growing interest to start a team again to play in our local church softball league. Anyone, male and female, 16 years and older (with parent's permission for 16 & 17 year olds) is eligible to play on the team. Friends of the church are eligible too, so spread the word! This is a great opportunity to stay physically active, share in some good times with each other and get to know the people in other churches. It will be fun! If you are interested, please sign up on the sheet in the back of the sanctuary or contact the church office.

Small Groups

Do you belong to a Small Group? If not, you really should seriously consider doing so. There are a variety of opportunities available which you can see on our website here. You will be able to see brief description of each Small Group, view when and where they meet, and see if there are openings to join the groups. Check out our active Small Groups and consider joining one of them. Alternatively, do you have a passion or interest? Then maybe you can start a brand new Small Group. Contact JoAnn Calkins or Pastor Bob for more information.

Digging Deeper Small Group

The Digging Deeper Small Group meets on Tuesday evenings at 7pm. Meetings will resume on October 25 in the Conference Room beside Pastor Bob's study. This group will be starting a new video series entitled, "Keep Climbing: Why God Doesn't Give You Everything You Want."  This Small Group exists to dig deeper into our faith and grow spiritually. We do this through study, sharing our stories and experiences with each other, and hold each other up in love and mutual accountability. You can join this Small Group by emailing the leader, Pastor Bob, or calling the church office.

Cathy Doane's Resignation

Dear Church Family,

After prayerful consideration, I have decided to resign as SUMC's Host Coordinator for Family Promise effective January 31, 2012. I have had the privilege of working with many of you over the past few years serving families who have fallen on difficult times. Thank you to all who have served, and will continue to serve, in this vital ministry. I pray this ministry will continue here at Stroudsburg Methodist as someone else answers God's call to serve in this capacity. We are searching for a few compassionate individuals who would like to help coordinate dinners, fellowship, and overnight volunteers for one week every three months. It shouldn't be hard to find a few compassionate people in a house full of them! I will be glad to assist you in the transition of leadership and introduce you to the other coordinators at the next FP Coordinators Meeting scheduled for February 7 at 7pm at the Presbyterian Church on Main Street. I have already received one phone call from an individual that would be willing to help in this capacity, but does not want to be the sole coordinator. With one or two more, we will have a team and be ready to go. Please contact me at (570)242-9845 as the spirit leads you to this important task.

Thank you,

Catherine Doane
