No More Religion in School - How Does This Affect Us?

Did you have prayer and Bible reading when you went to school? If you did, how was that experience? If you did not, do you wish you had? Bible reading and prayer were taken out of school some years ago. How does this affect us today? Worship this week will ask these questions and examine the affects of Bible reading and prayer no longer happening in the public schools. Then, we will explore some options of what we can do about it. Come to worship this week for an engaging and thought-provoking topic of public prayer and Bible reading!

2012 After Service Fellowship

We like to provide a Fellowship time on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of every month after both worship services. We are looking for volunteers (individuals, families, church groups, church committees, etc.) to help in providing and continuing these get togethers. The ASF Committee supplies the coffee, tea, sugar, cups and napkins. All you need to do is bring some snacks (cookies, brownies, pretzels, chips, etc.), milk/cream and punch. It doesn't need to be elaborate. Then you just set up the table, make the coffee and punch, and clean up afterwards. Give it some prayerful thought, ask a friend to join you, and sign up to provide an enjoyable after service Fellowship time. If you are a first time volunteer, please call Beryl @ 421-4024 or call Jackie in the church office - 421-6020 or email Thank you for helping!

DVD's of "Hotel Bethlehem" still available!

Do you belong to a Small Group? If not, you really should seriously consider doing so. There are a variety of opportunities available which you can see on our website here. You will be able to see brief description of each Small Group, view when and where they meet, and see if there are openings to join the groups. Check out our active Small Groups and consider joining one of them. Alternatively, do you have a passion or interest? Then maybe you can start a brand new Small Group. Contact JoAnn Calkins or Pastor Bob for more information.

Digging Deeper Small Group

The Digging Deeper Small Group meets on Tuesday evenings at 7pm. Meetings will resume on October 25 in the Conference Room beside Pastor Bob's study. This group will be starting a new video series entitled, "Keep Climbing: Why God Doesn't Give You Everything You Want."  This Small Group exists to dig deeper into our faith and grow spiritually. We do this through study, sharing our stories and experiences with each other, and hold each other up in love and mutual accountability. You can join this Small Group by emailing the leader, Pastor Bob, or calling the church office.

Small Group Discussion: Gifts - the Joy of Serving God

What spiritual gifts do you have? What contributions can you make to the church, so that it becomes what God intends - a light in a dark world? How do you cultivate a servant's heart and your spiritual gifts without wiping yourself out in the process? Through spiritual exercise, bible study, and group discussions, this study will guide us to the answers. Consider joining us: Mondays at 7:00 pm - in the church Lounge. For more information or to reserve your spot in the group, contact: Peggy Stewart 424-0625 or 350-8589. The next meeting date for this small group is Monday, January 30, 2012 @ 7:00 pm.

The series is called "Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours." Pastor Ted along with Ken Brown will be leading a series called "Praying When Life Doesn't Make Sense" based on the book "Talking in the Dark" written by Steve Harper. This series will be held Mondays from 7 pm - 8:30 pm. There will be 1 hour of discussion on the lesson and 30 minutes of silent prayer in the Sanctuary. More information on these classes is included in Sunday's bulletin and in the February Courier. Information on other classes in the series will follow.

Make a Difference!

Volunteer Drivers Needed!

The American Cancer Society is looking to recruit new volunteers to drive cancer patients to treatment. Training is provided. Please call Judy at 421-7939 for more information.

Give to a Mission

A variety of missions are supported in our church. You can make a difference both locally and around the world by giving to these missions. A list of missions we support is available in the back of the sanctuary. You can also suggest a new mission that interests you by providing the name and address of the mission, as well as some details about what this particular mission does.

Membership & Evangelism is organizing the Nursery to be staffed during worship at 11am on Sundays. If you are willing to volunteer to staff the nursery, please contact one of the M&E members or call the church office (570-421-6020). All volunteers must go through a child abuse and criminal background check. This is required as part of our Safe Sanctuaries Policy to ensure that the children are protected and also to put new parents' minds at ease. Please consider helping this important ministry!

Pledge cards are located at the back of the sanctuary along with 2012 offering envelopes. If you can deliver a box to a friend or neighbor who cannot make it to church, that would be appreciated!

Cathy Doane's Resignation

Dear Church Family,

After prayerful consideration, I have decided to resign as SUMC's Host Coordinator for Family Promise effective January 31, 2012. I have had the privilege of working with many of you over the past few years serving families who have fallen on difficult times. Thank you to all who have served, and will continue to serve, in this vital ministry. I pray this ministry will continue here at Stroudsburg Methodist as someone else answers God's call to serve in this capacity. We are searching for a few compassionate individuals who would like to help coordinate dinners, fellowship, and overnight volunteers for one week every three months. It shouldn't be hard to find a few compassionate people in a house full of them! I will be glad to assist you in the transition of leadership and introduce you to the other coordinators at the next FP Coordinators Meeting scheduled for February 7 at 7pm at the Presbyterian Church on Main Street. I have already received one phone call from an individual that would be willing to help in this capacity, but does not want to be the sole coordinator. With one or two more, we will have a team and be ready to go. Please contact me at (570)242-9845 as the spirit leads you to this important task.

Thank you,

Catherine Doane
