This weekend at SUMC:

Start off the new year right by joining us in worship to renew your covenant with God. This Sunday we will be participating in John Wesley's Covenant Renewal Service where we will each have the opportunity to devote or re-devote our lives to God. This powerful service of commitment was first used on August 11, 1755 and is still a powerful experience today! We will also be showing a video about one of our United Methodist retirement homes: Simpson House; featuring our own Pastor Emeritus, Rev. Tom Anderman. The special offering collected during holy communion will go toward the benevolent giving at Simpson House. Join us for a meaningful and uplifting time of worship this Sunday at 8:30 and 11:00am!

2012 Church Events

The 2012 calendar is up outside the conference room. Please put your events on the calendar so they can be included in the bulletin, Courier and online. The 2012 altar flowers chart is up in the Fellowship Room. $33.50 for 2 vases. Please note who the flowers are in honor/memory of and if you would like the flowers to go to shut-ins after worship or if you will be taking them home.

2012 After Service Fellowship

We like to provide a Fellowship tim on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of every month after both worship services. We are looking for volunteers (individuals, families, church groups, church committees, etc.) to help in providing and continuing these get togethers. The ASF Committee supplies the coffee, tea, sugar, cups and napkins. All you need to do is bring some snacks (cookies, brownies, pretzels, chips, etc.), milk/cream and punch. It doesn't need to be elaborate. Then you just set up the table, make the coffee and punch, and clean up afterwards. Give it some prayerful thought, ask a friend to join you, and sign up to provide an enjoyable after service Fellowship time. If you are a first time volunteer, please call Beryl @ 421-4024 or call Jackie in the church office - 421-6020 or email Thank you for helping!

DVD's of "Hotel Bethlehem" now available!

DVD's of the musical "Hotel Bethlehem" that was performed here at SUMC on Christmas Eve at 7:30 pm are now available for purchase. The cost is $5.00 per copy. If you would like a copy of the musical, please contact the church office - 421-6020. Thanks to Matt Parton for filming and editing the musical

Adult Sunday School

Please note: Adult Sunday School will meet downstairs in the "Blue" Sunday School room. The time remains the same - 9:45 am.

Small Groups

Do you belong to a Small Group? If not, you really should seriously consider doing so. There are a variety of opportunities available which you can see on our website here. You will be able to see brief description of each Small Group, view when and where they meet, and see if there are openings to join the groups. Check out our active Small Groups and consider joining one of them. Alternatively, do you have a passion or interest? Then maybe you can start a brand new Small Group. Contact JoAnn Calkins or Pastor Bob for more information.

Digging Deeper Small Group

The Digging Deeper Small Group meets on Tuesday evenings at 7pm. Meetings will resume on October 25 in the Conference Room beside Pastor Bob's study. This group will be starting a new video series entitled, "Keep Climbing: Why God Doesn't Give You Everything You Want."  This Small Group exists to dig deeper into our faith and grow spiritually. We do this through study, sharing our stories and experiences with each other, and hold each other up in love and mutual accountability. You can join this Small Group by emailing the leader, Pastor Bob, or calling the church office.

Small Group Discussion: Gifts - the Joy of Serving God

What spiritual gifts do you have? What contributions can you make to the church, so that it becomes what God intends - a light in a dark world? How do you cultivate a servant's heart and your spiritual gifts without wiping yourself out in the process? Through spiritual exercise, bible study, and group discussions, this study will guide us to the answers. Consider joining us: Mondays at 7:00 pm - in the church Lounge. For more information or to reserve your spot in the group, contact: Peggy Stewart 424-0625 or 350-8589. The next meeting date for this small group is Monday, January 30, 2012 @ 7:00 pm.

Make a Difference!

Volunteer Drivers Needed!

The American Cancer Society is looking to recruit new volunteers to drive cancer patients to treatment. Training is provided. Please call Judy at 421-7939 for more information.

Give to a Mission

A variety of missions are supported in our church. You can make a difference both locally and around the world by giving to these missions. A list of missions we support is available in the back of the sanctuary. You can also suggest a new mission that interests you by providing the name and address of the mission, as well as some details about what this particular mission does.

Membership & Evangelism is organizing the Nursery to be staffed during worship at 11am on Sundays. If you are willing to volunteer to staff the nursery, please contact one of the M&E members or call the church office (570-421-6020). All volunteers must go through a child abuse and criminal background check. This is required as part of our Safe Sanctuaries Policy to ensure that the children are protected and also to put new parents' minds at ease. Please consider helping this important ministry!

Pledge cards are located at the back of the sanctuary. Offering envelopes are in the Fellowship Room. If you can deliver a box to a friend or neighbor who cannot make it to church, that would be appreciated! Thank you!

Life Line Screening

Once again this year, SUMC will host Life Line Screening on Tuesday, February 21, 2012. Pre-registration is required. $149.00 for 5 screenings. Forms offering a $10.00 discount are available through the church office for members of SUMC. More information is on the flyers located at the back of the Sanctuary and in the January Courier. Copies of the flyers are also available in the church office.
