December 23, 2011

This weekend at SUMC:

Join us on Christmas Eve for a wonderful night of celebration! Worship at 7:30pm will feature the Choir and a musical entitled, "Hotel Bethlehem," which is a funny yet meaningful rendition of the Christmas story. We will conclude with the traditional candle lighting. Worship at 11pm will include carol-singing, a monologue sermon from the perspective of the Hotel Manager of Hotel Bethlehem, holy communion, and the traditional candle lighting. Join us for one or both of these very meaningful worship experiences to get you into the Christmas spirit!

We will hold one worship service on Christmas Sunday morning at 10am. You are encouraged to "come as you are" and we even told the children to come in their pajamas after they open their presents on Christmas morning. We will sing a few Christmas carols and talk about favorite Christmas traditions. Join us for this special worship on Christmas Day!

Small Groups

Do you belong to a Small Group? If not, you really should seriously consider doing so. There are a variety of opportunities available which you can see on our website here. You will be able to see brief description of each Small Group, view when and where they meet, and see if there are openings to join the groups. Check out our active Small Groups and consider joining one of them. Alternatively, do you have a passion or interest? Then maybe you can start a brand new Small Group. Contact JoAnn Calkins or Pastor Bob for more information.

Digging Deeper Small Group

The Digging Deeper Small Group meets on Tuesday evenings at 7pm. Meetings will resume on October 25 in the Conference Room beside Pastor Bob's study. This group will be starting a new video series entitled, "Keep Climbing: Why God Doesn't Give You Everything You Want."  This Small Group exists to dig deeper into our faith and grow spiritually. We do this through study, sharing our stories and experiences with each other, and hold each other up in love and mutual accountability. You can join this Small Group by emailing the leader, Pastor Bob, or calling the church office.

Small Group Discussion: Gifts - the Joy of Serving God

What spiritual gifts do you have? What contributions can you make to the church, so that it becomes what God intends - a light in a dark world? How do you cultivate a servant's heart and your spiritual gifts without wiping yourself out in the process? Through spiritual exercise, bible study, and group discussions, this study will guide us to the answers. Consider joining us: Mondays at 7:00 pm - in the church Lounge. For more information or to reserve your spot in the group, contact: Peggy Stewart 424-0625 or 350-8589.

DVD's Available

If anyone is interested in watching the movies "Letters to God" and "Facing the Giants", please let me know. I have copies of the movies in my office. Jackie

Make a Difference!

Volunteer Drivers Needed!

The American Cancer Society is looking to recruit new volunteers to drive cancer patients to treatment. Training is provided. Please call Judy at 421-7939 for more information.

Give to a Mission

A variety of missions are supported in our church. You can make a difference both locally and around the world by giving to these missions. A list of missions we support is available in the back of the sanctuary. You can also suggest a new mission that interests you by providing the name and address of the mission, as well as some details about what this particular mission does.

Membership & Evangelism is organizing the Nursery to be staffed during worship at 11am on Sundays. If you are willing to volunteer to staff the nursery, please contact one of the M&E members or call the church office (570-421-6020). All volunteers must go through a child abuse and criminal background check. This is required as part of our Safe Sanctuaries Policy to ensure that the children are protected and also to put new parents' minds at ease. Please consider helping this important ministry!

Pledge cards are located at the back of the sanctuary. Offering envelopes are in the Fellowship Room. If you can deliver a box to a friend or neighbor who cannot make it to church, that would be appreciated! Thank you!

The Servant Resource Team

SRT invites you to contribute to the annual Christmas box for our employees here at SUMC and to show appreciation to them at this time of year. It is located in the back of the Sanctuary. Thank you!

Merry Christmas!
